A driver rammed a police car as he tried to flee after a dramatic pursuit through residential streets in Thornton Heath last night.

Several police cars blocked in  the evading car which tried to ram them before hitting a wall on Melfort Road.

Officers carried out the “authorised pursuit”of the vehicle and this image captures the dramatic moment that police surround the white BMW, at around 7.45pm on Wednesday, (13 March).

After the fleeing vehicle was blocked in and stopped by officers it rammed the police car.  There were at least two marked police cars and two unmarked police cars involved in the chase which resulted in the closure of Melfort Road for around an hour.

Residents said that there was lots of shouting and that the driver had hit a front garden wall.

Police confirmed a man (no further details of age) had been arrested on suspicion of multiple offences in Thornton Heath.

A police spokesman added: “The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply, failing to stop, criminal damage and drug driving.

“The officers were uninjured.

“The male is currently in custody at a south London police station.”
