SCRFC’s warm up left a lot to be desired in their most recent league fixture against highly ranked Old Haileyburians as players were held up in traffic and spirits were uncharacteristically low.

However the 1st team skipper Barney Barnes made the objective clear when he rallied his players before the match, writes Millie Ross.

Fortunately when the whistle was blown the entire SCRFC side switched on showing a unity of purpose that has been lacking this season. Basic phase play up the pitch seemed to rattle – second in the league Old Haileyburians, who struggled to organise, culminating in two tries by the SCRFC side within the first 15 minutes. The opposition suddenly woke and proved to be deadly when their backs had possession and space, giving themselves two tries in the first half.

However, SCRFC stuck to the game plan by maintaining possession. Defensive training clearly paid off as after the first two tries Old Haileyburians struggled against SCRFC’ s defensive back line which was epitomised by Rolstone Langmead’s ‘Man of Steel’ performance.

The ever reliable SCRFC pack gave another solid performance that gave the platform needed for the back line. Try scorer and eventual ‘Man of the Match’ Lamont consistently tested the oppositions defensive line.

Twelve points ahead with 10 minutes to go SCRFC ground down the clock and held on for a great victory.

The women’s team have enjoyed a welcome two week break from league matches, after winning their last fixture 15-0 in a physical battle with local rivals Beccehamians Ladies, taking them to 3rd in the league.

The 1st XV have two challenging league fixtures before Christmas and started well beating Worthing 24 – 10.

If they go on to beat St Francis it will put them in good stead going into the New Year.

St Francis in particular will be a challenging contest on the December 12, as they lost to them in the first game of the season. However, the team has improved hugely in that time and the ladies are looking forward to a big last game before the break.
