The facelift of Thornton Heath Pond continues with the creation of a series of colourful mosaic panels.

The beautiful designs are the work of artist Grace Holliday and will be constructed with the help of volunteers over a weekend in March.

The mosaics which will be attached to the wall will add to the existing transformation of The Pond which has been planted up by volunteers and now has its own water supply.

Grace also designed the Brook Street mosaic as part of the THCAT Street Action initiative and she was also the artist involved in the refurbishment of  the Grangewood Park mosaic which was funded by the council’s Ambitious for Parks scheme.

Grace was given the theme of creating scenes of Pond life and she has designed a series of panels including flowing water, to represent the fountain which once stood at the Pond and the large amount of water that was around it,  with scenes featuring insects, water foliage, fish and a turtle.

Volunteers are needed to help create the mosaics, under the supervision of Grace, over the weekend of the March 9 and 10 from 10am – 4pm each day. The weekend of March 23 and 24  has been set aside to complete the mosaic and in case of bad weather on the earlier dates.

Peter Lawrence, project coordinator, said: “A big thank you to West Thornton councillors Stuart King and Janet Campbell for funding the mosaics at The Pond.”

If you would like to help create these amazing and beautiful mosaics please come along, no experience is necessary as Grace will show you what to do.

Children are welcome to join but must be with their parent or guardian at all times. Please bring strong gloves for handling the sharp tiles and plenty of enthusiasm!

Refreshments will be provided, however, donations of cakes, biscuits or other treats will be welcomed. Contact action@thorntonheath.net for more information
