An accident blackspot will benefit from a £15,000 green recovery award which aims to calm traffic, improve walking and cycling.

Despite having a 20mph speed restriction, Melfort Road which links Thornton Heath with Norbury is plagued by speeding motorists and has been the scene of a number of accidents.

Police are now frequently targeting the road with speed traps.

Melfort has already had hanging baskets and banners to improve the aesthetics of the street scene but the traffic and parking continues to be a problem. Residents (Samantha and Tom Foley, Barbara Benjamin, Nancy Wilden and Priya and Kem Tomlin) contributed to the application for the ‘Transform Your Street’ project, run by Bensham Manor and Broad Green councillors Jamie Audsley and Muhammad Ali who combined their Community Ward Budgets as the prize.

The proposal focused on three different criteria to benefit the community, environment and transportation. The Melfort Road plan aims to provide a solution to the pavement parking, improve cycling and ease congestion at the Brigstock Road end with planting to encourage wildlife. The project is set to start in March 2021.
