Thornton Heath library has recently undergone refurbishment of the community room and a change of layout in the reception area to offer a wider range of services to reflect local needs.

The work was done as part of a new borough-wide libraries initiative which sets out the council’s vision for libraries to be places that inform, involve and inspire Croydon residents and visitors. It includes plans for investment to expand the number of book titles, upgrade the existing IT systems, expand opening hours and look at  the role of using libraries as community hubs.

The ten year ambitious plans for libraries aims to make them more welcoming, attractive, vibrant, flexible spaces that can be used by the community for activities. The renovation of Thornton Heath library includes access to the council’s Gateway services where local people can get advice on housing and employment in the community. The new layout also offers drop in or bookable sessions in the library space for cultural activities such as written and spoken word, and music, performance, visual and digital arts.

However, some users haven’t been so impressed with the renovation of the Thornton Heath library particularly that the lift which has been out of order for over a year still hasn’t been fixed and that the Wifi is unreliable.
