Dozens of new jobs are being created in Thornton Heath as new restaurants and takeaways open their doors.

Larger premises like The Thames Farley, HSBC and Barclays, are still empty but a mini revival in the local  economy has seen Domino’s pizza opening along with Caribbean eateries and two new  sister restaurants at The Pond serving tapas and pizza.

While a lot of what is opening is more of the same  it makes the High Street look more bustling so could draw in further investment.

Domino’s alone will create 30 jobs for local people opening in the The Gold Ray Chicken shop at 40-42 High Street. The new store opens tomorrow (Fri) at 11am and it is offering a free cheese and tomato pizza to the first 100 customers.

A spokeswoman said: “We are very much looking forward to bringing freshly handmade to order pizza to homes in Thornton Heath when our new store on the High Street opens next month. The new store will create 30 jobs for local people and our full team of trainee managers, pizza makers, customer service representatives and delivery experts will be on-board and ready to serve delicious, piping hot pizza to residents when our doors open.”

The council is keen to revive district centres by making them more distinctive and themed to attract in shoppers and is investigating funding two pop shops on the High Street to give opportunities to entrepreneurs, artists or community groups needing to grow a business. The council funded competition would be similar to  that run on Portland Road, in South Norwood.

Taperia (tempting food pictured), also opened at 785 London Road, in the old Bunga Raya restaurant. The Spanish tapas bar and restaurant has an opening deal offering 10 per cent discount Monday to Thursday. Its sister restaurant a pizzeria called Tomatino’s will open hopefully at the beginning of February.

St Claire’s wine bar has now got a licence so will open shortly on Brigstock Road along with  the expected opening of a tattoo parlour. 

Patty Palace opened before Christmas and the Brigstock Cafe sold for £495,000.

Meanwhile, on Whitehorse Lane the Caribbean restaurant and cocktail bar The Dutchie is opening a second branch which will be solely a takeaway.

Other new offerings include The Heath selling groceries and frozen food at 32-34 High Street.

N055 has been let and a neighbouring empty shop is under offer while a fabric shop has opened at NO15.

The Elysium hairdressers on Ambassador House is also under offer.
