A charity set up to help young people is hosting Croydon’s first Youth Convention which will provide a free day of entertainment and opportunities.

Organised by the The Duffus Cancer Foundation, Croydon Town Hall will be buzzing with live music, inspirational speakers and interactive workshops on Friday  (February 22).  From boxing and dance sessions to creative writing, the aim of the day is to support young people’s wellbeing.

Acts on the day include: Beats and Eats, a Community Interest Company providing DJ workshops, Chris Lewis, the award winning global speaker and Gloves not Gunz, tackling youth violence and crime through boxing.  The Convention will be operating from 11am-4pm with refreshments available.

The Duffus Cancer Foundation (DCF) was formed in 2017, when the charity’s Founder, Leroy Duffus, formed a committee of friends and family who shared his vision.

This vision was to work together to support young people across South London who have experienced the devastation that cancer can bring when a loved one is diagnosed.  Leroy sadly lost his life to cancer in September.  The Convention was important to Leroy, who was passionate about creating a platform to support young people.

The Youth Convention is aimed at steering away from youth crime by providing young people with the opportunity to engage in constructive activities and develop positive hobbies and interests.  DCF prides itself on improving the lives of young people and this event is open to all.

Trustee, group work and strategic coordinator Brian Duffus, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the first event of its kind in Croydon.  Our staff and volunteers have been working hard to make this event a success and we are looking forward to making our dream a reality.”

With funding for this event from the National Lottery Community Fund, DCF is able to provide activities to support a positive mental health and it promises to be a great day.

Project coordinator Grace Lynch said: “It’s been really exciting preparing for this event; we are looking forward to meeting everyone for a great day of workshops, live performances and most importantly, fun!”
