It has been hailed as the first 100 per cent  affordable housing development by Croydon developer Brick by Brick.

Work began earlier this year to turn the derelict Cheriton House care home off Chipstead Avenue into 24 shared ownership homes with a mix of one and two beds and three affordable rented apartments.

Last month Deputy Mayor Humayun Kabir and Cabinet lead on housing Alison Butler, both Bensham Manor ward councillors, joined the design and construction team, at the topping out ceremony to mark the completion of the structure with the homes ready to occupy in spring 2019.

The development will be named Flora Court named after Flora Sandes, who lived in Thornton Heath and was  the only British woman to officially serve as a soldier in World War 1.

The scheme includes three affordable rented flats to be managed by Croydon Affordable Homes (CAH), a charity set up by the council to provide at least 250 homes for Croydon residents that cost no more than 65 per cent of the average market rent.

Brick by Brick Chief Executive Officer Colm Lacey,  said: “This site is a really great example of how Brick by Brick can convert an underused and unloved site and into much-needed affordable housing for Croydon residents. “

Brick by Brick assured The Chronicle: “We have a local sales and lettings policy which means that local people get exclusive access to all of our homes.”
