Police carried out an armed swoop arresting a 25-year-old man on Thornton Heath High Street today (Sun 10).

Several police cars rushed to the scene, with at least six police cars in attendance including unmarked vehicles.

The road was blocked by police on the opposite side of the road with the junction of Woodville Road, just before 1pm today (Sunday). The red car believed to be a Lexus was boxed in by police.

Our picture shows the suspect sat on the ground outside Aces Menswear surround by police including armed officers wearing protective vests. We have protected the identities of the suspect and officers.

This is the second incident on a Sunday where police have cordoned off a section of the High Street. Two weeks ago Cotford Parade was taped off on a Sunday afternoon after a man was slashed with a knife in a fight.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: “Just before 1pm on Sunday (May 10) armed officers stopped a car on Thornton Heath High Street, in relation to an ongoing investigation.

“Following the stop a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and motor vehicle offences.

“He is currently in custody in a south London police station.”
